It’s no different than reaching out for a glass of water when you’re thirsty, taking a nap when you’re tired or preparing yourself before a presentation. The way that I’ve normalized therapy in my life to those around me is through the ease in which I communicate my need for it, and how I infuse it into my everyday life. The honesty surrounding my mental health allows me to show up more confidently in my career, because I no longer hide behind performative strength, but in strong vulnerability, and when we do that, it creates room and a ripple effect in which others can seek the support that they need.

With a deep breath, I said “ I have to jump into my therapy session now, can we circle back tomorrow on this?”.Ī statement, that was firm, confident and the beginning of my openness to releasing the shame around mental health.īeing honest with myself and those around me has allowed me to become and embrace my full self. I had been in therapy for almost 6 years and often hid it behind the facade of “Lunch break, “Doctors appointment”, “Meeting conflict”.īut one of the freedoms of working Meta allowed me to embrace my journey of mental health. The clock was inching towards the time and the meeting felt like it had a good ten more minutes to go. I remember the first time I was in a meeting that was edging towards my regularly scheduled Monday at 4pm therapy session.
